A spring has broken

You will have heard a bang, and the door will be far too heavy to lift. Do not use the opener - it is not built to lift an unsprung door and you will strip the gear or bend the top section. Leave the door where it is. If your car is inside, it stays inside until someone comes.

The door is off track

Stop immediately and do not run the opener to reseat it. In the older core, forcing an off-track door bends narrow original track and tears the anchoring out of century-old jambs, which turns a repair into a replacement.

The door is frozen down

Break the ice bond along the bottom seal first with warm water and a plastic scraper, then lift. On the low ground the bond is usually harder than elsewhere because the slab was already wet. Using the opener to break it is how cables snap.

The door is stuck open overnight

If it will not close and cannot be secured, the manual release lets you lower it by hand - but only if the springs are intact. If a spring has broken, the door is too heavy to lower safely and should be left up.
